Real Estate development in Staten Island seems to be plagued by political scandals, affecting the island's chance to get a movie studio!

The Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, located in Charleston, was closed down back in 2011 by State Governor Andrew Cuomo. The lot was being scouted by the film industry as the location for a new movie studio.

New York Comptroller Tom DiNapoli stopped the $7 million dollar sale of the former prison, which is state-owned land, to the developer of Broadway Stages. Broadway Stages had plans to turn the property into a movie studio.

The reasoning for DiNapoli’s actions was due to Broadway Stages' owner, Gina Argento, currently being under state and federal investigation for alleged illegal campaign

Early in 2016, the minor league baseball team affiliated with the New York Yankees announced that they wanted to change the team name that they had since 1999. However, the name change has been put on hold!

The Staten Island Yankees are Staten Island's minor league baseball team, nicknamed the "Baby Bombers" being affiliated with the New York Yankees, play in the New York-Penn League at the Richmond County Ballpark situated along the waterfront in St. George.

Empire Outlets Mall will consist of 100 outlet stores, include a 190-room hotel, and a parking garage on the land that was formerly just a parking lot adjacent to the St. George Ferry Terminal. The under-construction mall recently received $20 million in taxpayer money from the state of New York.

That was just the most recent grant of public funds. The mall previously received an additional $47 million. In fact, so far, $66 million of the $350 million project has been paid for with state funds.

The $20 million grant just happened to come a few weeks after one of the three partners, Joseph Ferrara in BFC, donated $3,500 to Governor Cuomo's 2018 re-election campaign in a two check payment on January 4th.

This is just the latest donation to

Last month, we reported that the MTA had proposed to raise the tolls and fares by March 2017. There was to be a vote on the proposals in January to decide the outcome and final cost. Against most predictions, it was voted to not raise the base fare for a single subway and bus ride; they will remain to be $2.75 per ride.

However, before we get overly excited about the news, the decision will carry with it serious economic consequences for many residents that live in the five boroughs.

Although the single fare rate will stay the same, the MTA board is going to significantly raise the weekly and monthly Metrocards price, beginning March 19 of this year. Unbelievably, it was nearly unanimous, with only a single board member voting against it.
