Closures at the Goethals Bridge This Weekend, Starting Tonight at 10 P.M.
on Friday, June 9th, 2017 at 11:38am.
Today is the last day to drive over the Goethals Bridge as we know it.
The Goethals Bridge, which is an 89-year-old span that connects Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Staten Island, will be closed starting Friday night, being replaced by twin spans.
Closures and Opening Details, as well as Alternate Routes:
Beginning at 10 P.M. tonight, (Friday, June 9th,) the Goethals Bridge will be closed in both directions to accommodate the transition of the new Goethals Bridge.
On Saturday, June 10th, in the late afternoon, eastbound traffic is expected to resume on the new Goethals Bridge. On Sunday, June 11th, also in the late afternoon, westbound traffic is expected to resume on the bridge.
Both the Bayonne Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing will be open. Consider using the Bayonne Bridge as an alternate route during the Goethals Bridge closure, as high traffic is expected for the Outerbridge.
The new Goethals Bridge span will have three 12-foot lanes along with 12-foot outer shoulders and 5-foot inner shoulders, each. The first of the twin spans will be open to New York-bound traffic in the late afternoon on Saturday, while New Jersey-bound lanes will open in the late afternoon on Sunday. The second of the twin spans will open in 2018.
The Port Authority says the $1.5 billion new Goethals Bridge crossing is the agency's first new bridge built since the Bayonne Bridge was completed in 1931. When the second span's construction is completed and opened in 2018, the eastbound and westbound traffic will be separated onto the two bridges.
