Seaview hospital, also known as The Farm Colony, had become a landmark in 1985. There is now a new proposal to transform the location; Back in August 2016, New York City developers announced that they had planned to restore the area into a living and healthy community.
The Sea View Hospital, which has an area that has been abandoned for several years, originally opened in 1913. This hospital was built on a 25-acre hilltop located in Willowbrook, making it the second tallest point of Staten Island, first being Todt Hill. In the early 20th Century, it was where patients with tuberculosis were treated. When a cure was invented, the operations for the hospital began to dwindle down in the 1950s. Today, less than half of the land is occupied by 40 structures.
Their main intentions about this redevelopment would be focusing mostly on health. The city wants to transform the neglected area of the hospital campus into a health-focused development that will have residential facilities with options for affordability and public spaces. There will also be a landscape that promotes physical activity, along with retail components, such as a farm-to-table restaurant, community farms, and grocery stores. The renovated Sea View Hospital will be known as the Sea View Healthy Community.
Headlined by the city's Economic Development Corporation, they are partnering with Staten Island's borough president James Oddo, and New York City Health and Hospital to transform Seaview into a mixed-used health focused development.
In the next few months, we will learn more about the proposal that is seeking to transform the 80-acre property, which also comes with an additional 180 acres of parkland.
This landmark, that has been closed for quite a long time, will be useful for exciting improvements. Especially benefiting and helping over 2,000 patients with health issues in this restored establishment. Bringing this establishment back to life and using it for a good cause will be a positive change for the island. There are many plans being brainstormed and there has not been an official announcement when the Sea View Healthy Community will be open.
