In 1909, the City of New York acquired 105 acres of land in the neighborhood of Willowbrook. Twenty years later, this area of land was assigned to the Parks Department. In 1939 and 1940, land was purchased for the carosel_at_willowbrook_park_400Willowbrook Parkway. Today, the park consists of over 200 acres in the neighborhood which bears the same name. It is located to the east of Richmond Avenue, between the streets of Ashworth Avenue and Victory Boulevard. The eastern boundary of the park is the 240-acre campus for the College of Staten Island.

To the east, it is bordered by Little Clove Road, while to the north and south it is bordered by Victory Boulevard and Windsor Road, respectively. This puts the park on the boundary between the neighborhoods of Sunnyside and Royal Oak, which is also known as Castleton Corners.

The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation obtained the land for Clove's Tail Park in 1954 from an Evangelical Lutheran Church. While the name of the church itself is not known, we do know that this church was…

Sign at the entrace to the Staten Island MallIn 1935, 250 acres of land in the neighborhood of New Springville/Heatland Village were being converted into an airport by Ed McCormick.  By 1941, the airport opened as the Staten Island Airport beneath Richmond Hill Road, adjacent to a drive-in movie theater.  The drive-in movie theater remained while the airport closed in 1964.  By the next year, a building was constructed for an E.J. Korvette department store, completely changing the neighborhood from its rural setting of chicken farms.

After the department store chain went bankrupt in 1980, it closed down.  During the early part of the prior decade, however, another building was already under construction nearby.  The construction of this building and its accompanying parking lot was so large that…
