Today, the main line of the Staten Island Railway is still in operation and is quite popular. There are currently twenty-two stations being used. However, a station just before the last stop in southern Staten Island is planned and will replace the second- and third-to-last stops, which are quite close together. This station would be known as the Arthur Kill Road station, as that is where it will be located.
The first station of the Staten Island Railway is at the St. George Ferry Terminal, which is located at Bay Street and
Richmond Terrace. This wheelchair-accessible station provides passengers with access to the ferry, as well as over one dozen buses which begin or end their routes here and travel to points all over the Island. These buses include the s40, s42, s44, s46, s48, s51, s52, s61, s62, s66, s74, s76, and s78. As of this writing, the fare to get on the subway is $2.25 which, like the City's other trains and subways, can be paid by using a MetroCard. This station has been the main terminus for each branch of the Staten Island Railway.
Going south, the next stop is the Tompkinsville station, which is located at Bay Street and Victory Boulevard. This station, like the St. George station, was added to the railway on July 31, 1884. To get here, it would take approximately three minutes coming from the St. George Ferry Terminal. The buses which stop by the station are the s46, s48, s61, s62, s66, and s78. Like the previous station, the fare is $2.25. Right by the station, you can find Lyons Pool, a landmarked facility with an Olympic-sized pool.
Next on the line is the Stapleton station. Located at Bay Street and Prospect Avenue, it would take you roughly five minutes to get here from the St. George Ferry Terminal. This was the last station to be added on July 31, 1884. From this station all the way down to Tottenville, rides are free of charge. The buses which make their stops here are the s51, s52, s74, and s76.
Following these stations are one dozen more stations which were all completed by April 23, 1860. The first of these is the Clifton station. It was also where a junction allowed passengers to travel down the South Beach branch to the east, instead of going down south toward Tottenville. This station is located at Bay Street and Townsend Avenue and is connected to the local s52 bus. It would take about seven minutes to get here from the St. George Ferry Terminal.
Grasmere is the next station of the Staten Island Railway's main line. It is located at Clove Road and Giles Place. The only bus which connects to the terminal is the s53. It would take you approximately ten minutes to travel from the St. George Ferry Terminal to this station.
Next up, we have three stations of the Staten Island Railway which are not connected to any buses. The first of these is the Old Town station, which is located at Old Town Road and North Railroad Avenue. To get here from the St. George Ferry Terminal, you will be taking about a twelve minute ride.
Dongan Hills comes next on the line. This station is located at Seaview Avenue and North Railroad Avenue. The Dongan Hills station is one of the few stations of the Staten Island Railway which is both wheelchair-accessible and has a Park N Ride feature. To get here from the St. George Ferry Terminal, it would take you approximately fourteen minutes.
Next we have the Jefferson Avenue station which, if you haven't guessed, it located at Jefferson Avenue. The other street, like its former stations, is North Railroad Avenue. About sixteen minutes would be spent on the ride from the St. George Ferry Terminal to this station.
The next stop on the Staten Island Railway is the Grant City station. This station is located at Lincoln Avenue and North Railroad Avenue. To travel here from the St. George Ferry Terminal, it would take roughly seventeen minutes. The local bus which connects to this station is the s51.
After Grant City you have the New Dorp train station. This station is located at New Dorp Lane and North Railroad Avenue. It is a very busy location due to the fact that it is right on New Dorp Lane, a major commercial area. The buses that stop over here are the s57 and the s76. It takes about nineteen minutes to get from the St. George Ferry Terminal to this station.
Over on South Railroad Avenue and Guyon Avenue, you will find the next stop of the Staten Island Railway: Oakwood Heights. This station is also connected to the local s57 bus. Approximately twenty-one minutes would be spent taking the trip to this station from the St. George Ferry Terminal.
The next stop is the Bay Terrace station. Here, you will find yourself at Justin Avenue and South Railroad Avenue. While there are no buses in the immediate vicinity, the enormous Great Kills Park is just below you at the shore. It would take about twenty-three minutes to get here from the St. George Ferry Terminal.
The Great Kills station is next, being located at Giffords Lane and Brower Court. This station is connected to the local s54 bus, as well as two express buses: the x7 and x8. Like the Dongan Hills station, the Great Kills station is wheelchair-accessible and features a Park N Ride. Roughly twenty-five minutes would be spent traveling from the St. George Ferry Terminal to this station.
The next station is the Eltingville station, which is located at Richmond Avenue and Eltingville Boulevard. As we get closer to the end of the line, you will find many stations which are linked to express buses. This station, for instance, is linked to the x1, x4, and x5. As for the local buses, you can catch the s59, s79, and s89 here. Your ride from the St. George Ferry Terminal to this station would take approximately twenty-seven minutes.
The Annadale station, which comes after the Eltingville station, is quite picturesque. It is located at Annadale Road and Sneden Avenue and is reminiscent of a town center, being next to Annadale Green and commercial properties. This station features a Park N Ride, in addition to being connected to the s55 bus. It would take about twenty-nine minutes to get here from the St. George Ferry Terminal.
Next you have the Huguenot station, which is located at Huguenot Avenue and West Terrace. This, too, features a Park N Ride facility. The buses connected with this station are the local s55, as well as the x17, x19, and x23 express buses. From the St. George Ferry Terminal, it would take approximately thirty-one minutes to get to this station.
Prince's Bay is the next stop on the Staten Island Railway line. This station is located at Seguine Avenue and Waterbury Avenue. Like the two stations before it, the Prince's Bay station features a Park N Ride facility. The local s55 and s56 buses are connected with this station, in addition to the x23 express bus. Roughly thirty-three minutes would be spent taking the train here from the St. George Ferry Terminal.
The next stop on the line is the Pleasant Plains station. This station is located at Amboy Road and Penton Street. It is connected to the local s55 bus. Traveling from the St. George Ferry Terminal to the Pleasant Plains station would take approximately thirty-five minutes.
After Pleasant Plains, Richmond Valley is the next stop on the Staten Island Railway line. This station is located at Amboy Road and Cozzens Boulevard. To get to the Richmond Valley train station from the St. George Ferry Terminal, it would take approximately thirty-seven minutes.
The next stop on the Staten Island Railway is Nassau, which is located at Arthur Kill Road and St. Andrews Place. The connecting bus to this station is the s74. To get here from the St. George Ferry Terminal, it would take you approximately thirty-nine minutes.
The next stop, which is also the second-to-last stop on the line, is the Atlantic station. This station is located at Arthur Kill Road and Tracy Avenue, and is connected to the local s78 bus. It would take roughly forty minutes to get here from the St. George Ferry Terminal.
As stated, plans have been made to demolish two stations of the Staten Island Railway so that they could be replaced by a single station. These would be the Nassau and Atlantic stations. The new station would be known as the Arthur Kill Station and would be located between the two existing stations. This wheelchair-accessible station would be connected to the local s74 and s78 buses. It would take roughly forty minutes to get here from the St. George Ferry Terminal.
The next stop on the Staten Island Railway line is the Tottenville station. This is also the last station on the line. It is located at Arthur Kill Road and Bentley Street. To get here from the St. George Ferry Terminal, it would take approximately forty-two minutes.
When you think about it, the forty-plus minutes it takes to get here from the St. George Ferry Terminal are actually quite convenient when compared to the street traffic you will find while driving. What's even more convenient is the fact that the trains run all day. During the weekdays, you will find that they run just about every hour up until 4 a.m. From there, it's about every half hour, with closer times during the morning and afternoon rush hours. The weekend service has the trains run every hour and then every half hour after 5 a.m.(as of 5/24/2012)
