"Together We Learn, Together We Grow"
In 1878, Westfield Township District School No. 5 was constructed in the present neighborhood of Tottenville. By the turn of the century, another school building was constructed above it, at 58 Summit Street. The new building came to be known as Public School 1, while the older structure became the Public School 1 Annex. On March 22, 1916, the school itself was designated as the Tottenville School, for the neighborhood in which it sits. It is said that this school is the oldest on Staten Island that has been continuously used as a public school. As a result, the P.S. 1 Annex was designated as a New York City Landmark on May 16, 1995.
P.S. 1 serves children from pre-kindergarten all the way up to the eighth grade. The school offers special science and geology programs for all the grade-levels. They also have technology integration and music classes for the second grade through eighth grade, and the School Enrichment Model program for third, fourth, and fifth graders. The annex is used for some special education programs, the gymnasium, and science classrooms. The rest of the rooms, such as the speech room and computer lab, are located in the primary building. The school’s motto is “Together We Learn, Together We Grow”.
