"The Place To Be"
Public School 3 is located at 80 South Goff Avenue, in the Pleasant Plains neighborhood. It was erected around the middle of the twentieth century and named the Margaret Gioisa School, after a member of the Staten Island District School Board who died in 1990. The school’s annex is located nearby, at 6581 Hylan Boulevard. This building sits within the Mount Loretto site and was used for the school’s annex because the Mount Loretto facility lost funding.
Public School 3’s motto is “The Place To Be”. The school teaches students from pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade, and it has special education programs. The P.S. 3 annex is used for second and third grade classes, and it also has its own standard rooms of a school building, such as a cafeteria and nurse room, since it is not directly next to the school’s main building. P.S. 3 has quite a few unique programs and classes, such as computerized instruction, a science lab, chorus, Latch Key, and an art and culture program. After-school programs include arts and crafts, games and sports, and test-taking preparation classes. The school also participates in the Gifted and Talented program, which is only available at a handful of schools on Staten Island.
