"Tradition of Excellence"
Around the 1950s, Public School 54 was being built in the neighborhood of Willowbrook. This school still stands where it was originally constructed, at 1060 Willowbrook Road. Public School 54 is also known as the Charles W. Leng School. Charles W. Leng was a Staten Island naturalist that specialized in beetles. He had worked closely with William T. Davis on preserving the history of Staten Island.
Public School 54 works with students from Pre-Kindergarten up until the fifth grade. Along with their regular classes, they also offer special education classes and specialized classes. The specialized classes they offer are more general for kindergarten up to fourth grade, but the fifth graders have a choice of which academy they would like to be a part of. The Fifth Grade Academies are Economics & Business, Journalism & Media, Law & Government, Performing & Visual Arts, and Science & Technology. Some of the other programs and extracurricular activities they have are Independent Investigation Method, Chorus and Band, Robotics, Specialized Trips, Young Diplomat Program, Student Council, School Newspaper, and more!
