Public School 9

The Naples Street Elementary School

Public School 9 is one of the newer schools on Staten Island that opened in September 2013. This school will be located in Grasmere, at 1055 Targee Street, where the old P.S. 48 used to be located. Public School 9 will be named The Naples Street Elementary School. They choose this name due to one of the surrounding streets and the Naples Playground that is located next to the school. Around the 1950s, the City of New York had bought the two plots of land next to the school to make a playground. This playground is known as Naples Playground and is for both the school to use during school hours and for the community to use after school hours.

As per opening, this school will only consist of Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes, but will add grades up to the fifth grade, in the following years. This school is going to be an “Open Choice” school, meaning that anyone from Staten Island can apply to attend the school.
