Origin and History of Sea Girt

The origins and history of Sea Girt date back to the late 19th century. Around that time, the town started to gain recognition as a desirable summer vacation spot.

Before the arrival of the Europeans, Lenape and other Native American tribes called Sea Girt home. However, the potential for a seaside resort community didn't start to materialize until the middle of the 1800s.

Due to its stunning beaches and relaxing atmosphere, Sea Girt rose to popularity as a resort town in the late 1800s. Large land parcels were purchased by the Sea Girt Land Improvement Company, which was run by wealthy businessmen and developers and transformed the town into a resort area.

To house the expanding number of tourists seeking seaside leisure and relaxation, opulent hotels, boarding houses, and cottages were built. As more people learned about the town's charming coastal atmosphere, its popularity kept rising.

The Sea Girt Lighthouse was constructed in 1896 to improve coastal maritime safety. With its distinctive architecture, the lighthouse stands as a significant historical site and represents Sea Girt's maritime history.

As the U.S. Army established Camp Sea Girt in 1917, Sea Girt played a significant role in the military during World War I. Soldiers training for combat abroad used the camp as a training ground. The National Guard is still present in the region today.

Sea Girt continued to expand and develop after World War II. The community changed from being primarily a seasonal resort town to a year-round residential one. Many visitors who fell in love with the community chose to settle permanently in Sea Girt.
