In the 1960s, the Park Hill apartment complex was built as part of New York City's plan for urban renewal. The apartments were constructed on the site of the long-defunct Fox Hills Golf Club. The Clifton station of the Staten Island railway is just three stops from St. George and the Staten Island Ferry.

In the 1800s most of the land in the Clifton area was owned by the Vanderbilt family. Cornelius Vanderbilt established a ferry service that took people from what is now known as Vanderbilt Avenue directly to Manhattan.

Public schools in the Clifton area include PS 48, PS 14, IS 49 and Concord High School.
