It's hard to find a person in America who has never heard of the World War One.  As a refresher course, I'll give you a little back story.  It all began on the 28th of July in 1914, when Austria-Hungary had invaded Serbia.  Soon, many other countries became involved and eventually, an enormous war broke out.  For roughly two and a half years, the United States stayed neutral during the war-even after Germany sank the Lusitania, a British ocean liner which was cwhite_playground_5_400arrying 128 Americans.  During the beginning of 1917, however, Germany sank several American ships heading toward Britain, knowing full well that it would result in the United States entering the war.  As you can imagine, that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Up until 1918, roughly three…

fdr_boardwalk_south_beach_2_640During the nineteenth century, much of Staten Island was used as a summer resort for its neighboring boroughs.  This was especially so closer to the shore, where people had access to the beach.  By the beginning of the twentieth century, in 1906, an amusement park opened on the eastern shore of Staten Island.  The Happyland Amusement Park, located in South Beach, was a widely anticipated attraction-so much so that at the time of its opening, thirty-thousand people traveled to Staten Island for its grand opening.

In 1912, a carousel was constructed at Happyland Amusement Park. The carousel became the most popular attraction of the park.  However, it was not the only feature enjoyed by the amusement park's visitors.  Happyland Amusement Park also had such…

Staten Island's gateway to the east.

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge looking tward Ft. Wadsworth

Ten years before the consolidation of New York in 1898, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had announced that the North Shore Railroad in Staten Island would have a railroad switch which would lead to a tunnel across the Narrows and into Brooklyn. Financial difficulties, however, prohibited the project from being put in motion. In 1910, another attempt at a crossing along the Narrows was considered-this time as a 260-foot-high bridge. The military dismissed this idea, as they believed the bridge would be a nuisance during wartime.

By 1913, another plan for a tunnel was proposed. After being accepted, the project was started in 1923. However, just like the first tunnel attempt, this project was discontinued due…

Alice Austen House, Staten Island NYDuring the late seventeenth century and early eighteenth century, a single-room, half-timbered Dutch Colonial home was built at 2 Hylan Boulevard. Many repairs and renovations were made to the house, including the demolition of the structures not attached to the house.
