New Creek is wetlands that had existed for centuries and will be restored as a new waterway. After many years of this land being used as an illegal landfill and residential and commercial development, it is going to become a man-made wetland, bringing the wetlands to the 21st Century with drainage, basins, and sewer infrastructure to help handle flooding from 2,200 acres of land surrounding the New Creek Bluebelt.

Settled by the Dutch, the branches of the land still retain their rural, small town roots, isolated houses, and open marshlands. New Creek was given its name around 1797 by the Dutch Village of Oude Dorpe, making it Europe's first permanent settlement on Staten Island. A new $100 million dollar project is coming to South Beach streets. The plan will repair roadways and add sewers due to the flooding that occurs in this neighborhood.

The city began work last month on improving drainage, rebuilding roadways, and upgrading the South Beach drinking water distribution system. This will tackle the heavy flooding that occurs during heavy rainfalls.

The neighborhood currently has a small number of catch basins. The storm sewers are very limited and cannot handle the heavy rainfalls. This project will fix this issue. Verrazano-Narrows Bridge has been working as Staten Island's connection to Brooklyn for 52 years. Something us Islanders can all agree with is that we despise the tolls and traffic to the tollbooths.

With every bridge in New York City that has a toll system, Governor Cuomo announces a plan to increase toll areas, making it automatic, with fewer headaches, especially if there is an issue with payment. The automatic tollbooth will scan the license and send a bill later in a week or so.
